Clan Crawford AssociationThis is the website for people of English birth, with the surname Crawford or one of its variant spellings shown on the home page of www.clancrawford.org. While many Scots emigrated to America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, over the centuries, other Scots moved south to England the 'auld enemy' and their descendents became Anglo Scots. Despite the 'history' between England and Scotland, I hope English people with the surname will be accepted as equals by their fellow clansmen, especially if they can trace their origin to a Scottish ancestor.
Unfortunately, I myself have not been able to find such a connection and have succeeded only in proving my Englishness, even though my family tree can be traced back nine generations to a William Crawford born circa 1671 in the county of Oxfordshire, England. Perhaps William's farther moved to England as other Scots did to Ireland, after James VI of Scotland became King of England in 1603. My Y-DNA which has been tested by Family Tree DNA does indicate some Scottish background although my Haplogroup – R1a1 suggests a Viking origin. Despite this I have a keen interest in the Crawford clan and Scotland. I toured that country extensively on holiday during the 1980s, when I visited the old clan lands in the Lowlands including Crawford village, origin of the surname, where I purchased a clock containing our tartan which is proudly displayed on my living room wall.
